Q: I have epilepsy. Is it OK for me to drink wine?—Theodore, New York

A: Epilepsy is a neurological disorder associated with unpredictable seizures. According to Dr. Mary Jo Pugh of the University of Utah, research indicates that adults with epilepsy may have one or two alcoholic drinks without negatively impacting their condition. However, she adds, "keep in mind that seizure medications can lower your tolerance for alcohol, so one drink may have a bigger effect than you might expect." The bottom line is that epileptics should limit themselves to one or two drinks a day and consume them slowly, so as not to experience rapid intoxication. And as always, consult your physician about making wine a part of your healthy lifestyle.
