That bottle of wine on your dinner table didn't vinify itself, you know. A lot of labor, strategizing and general hand-wringing accompany the journey of a bunch of grapes into a great bottle of wine. Wine Spectator's winemaker diaries give you an inside look as the grapes roll in from vineyards in Tuscany, Napa Valley, Sonoma County and France, so you'll be among the first to know how the 2001 vintage is shaping up in some of the world's most important wine regions.

Last year's diaries included plenty of technical details on brix and barrels, lamentations over bloody hot harvest days, a surfing Frenchman and tales of Tuscan grape pickers skipping work to hit a country fair. As for 2001, it's only early September, and we've already seen predictions of a 9-out-of-10 year for California whites, a case of masquerading Gamay in Italy, and some heated rugby rivalries in Sonoma vineyards. So be sure to check out the winemakers' diaries early and often for a sneak peek at the most crucial (and stressful) event on the vintner's calendar.
