Both Pinot Gris and Semillon can make flavorful wines with rich, round mouthfeels.


Pinot Gris


"Gris" means gray in French, and Pinot Gris grapes are a pinkish-gray when ripe. A relation of Pinot Noir, this vine also prefers a cool, dry climate.

Both Alsace in France and the northeastern regions of Italy are known for Pinot Gris.

Alsace produces the finest dry versions of this variety, which was formerly called Tokay d'Alsace. Now, the varietal from Alsace is labeled simply Pinot Gris.

Northeastern Italy produces large quantities of Pinot Grigio, as the grape is called here. In Germany it is known as Rülander.
