Dear Dr. Vinny,

Can a wall-mounted wood wine rack be used for both reds and whites?

—Nains, London

Dear Nains,

Wall-mounted shelves that store bottles of wine horizontally are good for any type or color of wine. The important part here is that the bottle is resting on its side, so that the wine is in contact with the cork, which will prevent the cork from drying out (dried-out or otherwise compromised corks put your wine at risk of oxidation).

Storing bottles of wine on their side is a key element of proper wine storage (the other primary considerations are, most important, temperature, along with humidity, light and vibration). Consider, however, that unless you live in a cave, the wines in your wall-mounted rack are all going to be at room temperature, which is a little warmer than the recommended serving temperatures for both reds and whites. All of your wines will be just fine stored in a wall-mounted rack for a few months or even years; just make sure the rack isn't getting any direct sunlight or hanging above a radiator.
