Dear Dr. Vinny,

Is it possible to make lollipops from wine?

—Lisa, Aspers, Pa.

Dear Lisa,

Wine lollipops are indeed a thing—we've tried a few!

You might also be wondering if wine lollipops are safe for kids, and the answer is: It depends. Commercially made wine lollipops should be clearly labeled, but if you're making them at home, you should remember that while alcohol does tend to evaporate when cooking with wine, some of it usually remains. Based on findings by the USDA, wine-based candy that has been simmered or boiled for about 30 minutes will still have about a third of the original alcohol by volume remaining.

It's not hard to find recipes for wine lollipops on the Internet. Most of them start by making a wine reduction, mixing it with corn syrup, sugar and salt, then bringing that to a boil before pouring it into molds or onto parchment paper.

There are lots of creative ways to add color, texture and flavor to basic recipes, so have fun experimenting!
