Dear Dr. Vinny,

I was wondering if it’s OK to store wine in a cedar-lined closet. Could the cedar aroma leach through the capsule and taint the wine?

—John R., Cherry Hill, N.J.

Dear John,

Cedar is often used as a wine-rack material. I’ve used cedar wine shelves myself, and have never had a problem with the odor affecting my wines. That wonderful cedar aroma might be more concentrated in a closet, but there’s no evidence that ambient odors can affect sealed bottles of wine. It's possible the wine labels could end up smelling like cedar, but the wine itself should be fine.
