Dear Dr. Vinny,
Are all of the wines reviewed by Wine Spectator available in the U.S.?
—Michael, Carlsbad, N.M.
Yes. Because we are based in the United States, we focus our reviews on wines that are available here, which means we typically work directly with importers for samples and information.
If you look at most of our reviews, you’ll see that we publish the number of cases made or imported when that information is available. We hope this information can help manage your expectations for how easy it will be to track down. The exact number of cases imported can sometimes be tricky to figure out. For example, a single wine can have multiple importers each representing different parts of the U.S. Or an importer might bring over a small amount of wine at first but, depending on demand (and reviews), might decide to bring over more at a later date.
The number of cases available is also one of the factors that we take into account when deciding which wines to review. We try to balance our coverage of widely available wines with those that are worth the search. When we decide to cover a wine made or imported in a limited quantity, it’s because we feel there is a reason to do so—it might be one of the best examples of its category, or represent an emerging region or category of wine, have a long track record for excellence, or we know there is some buzz about it.
