Dear Dr. Vinny,
When is the best time to drink Port or dessert wine? Before or after coffee, dessert, or all together?
—Tamer, São Paulo, Brazil
I love a slightly chilled tawny Port as an aperitif, especially with cheese and nuts, but you’re right that the rich flavors and sweetness lend most Vintage Ports to a post-meal treat.
I like to enjoy Port with a cheese course or with dessert, especially if it’s a chocolate-based dessert. As far as coffee, I think that’s really a matter of personal preference. I find many really good coffees can have Port-like flavors that make the pairing a natural mix, but I’m more likely to want to end my meal with a sip of wine.
