For a look at the state of Uruguayan winemaking today, Kim Marcus tasted about 50 wines from its leading producers over the past year. The focus was on Tannat, but he sampled other varietals as well. A half-dozen wines scored an outstanding 90 points or higher. The best reds were made in a ripe style, with rich dark fruit and spice flavors and modest tannins.
