As of this spring, wines made from the westernmost reaches of the Sonoma Coast can be labeled under the West Sonoma Coast AVA. Approval of the new AVA makes it the third sub-AVA within the greater Sonoma Coast, as well as Sonoma County’s 19th AVA.

In 2016, Château Haut-Brion owner Prince Robert de Luxembourg and his wife, Princess Julie, were devastated to find that their youngest son, Frederik, was gravely ill with a mysterious disease. To help raise money for the cause, they partnered with Sotheby’s to auction an impressive collection straight from the wine cellar at Haut-Brion. Some 4,200 bottles of collectible wines, comprising 818 lots, were sold, most for above estimate, for a total of more than $6.23 million.

Plus, prominent Northern Rhône Valley producer E. Guigal has expanded its holdings in the Southern Rhône with the purchase of Château d’Aquéria in Tavel from the de Bez family. Read on for the news roundup in Wine Spectator's August 31, 2022, issue.
