Normally, I don't go for cocktails that require a note from your dentist, but the mint julep is one sugary concoction for which I make an exception. Three things compel this saccharine embrace. One, I consider the first mint julep sip of the season—usually enjoyed while watching the Kentucky Derby on a lovely Saturday in May—a rite of spring that equals the sighting of a robin red breast.
