It’s all about the classics at San Diego’s Born and Raised. Inspired by the steak houses of the early 20th century, the restaurant is set in an opulent Little Italy space featuring gold-hued ceilings, columns and archways, and a sparkling chandelier. The centerpiece of chef Jason McLeod’s menu is the assortment of steaks, dry-aged in the restaurant’s own glass-enclosed dry-aging room. Keeping with the luxurious theme, there are plenty of dishes served with dramatic tableside presentations, such as steak Diane, Caesar salad and bananas Foster, plus a bar cart for martinis, Manhattans and Rob Roys. Managed by wine director Rafael Peterson, the 370-selection wine list earned Wine Spectator’s Best of Award of Excellence for its first entry in 2019. Peterson aims to represent the world’s classic wine regions to reflect the cuisine, offering an eclectic mix of top producers that’s strongest in California, France and Italy. Hunt for gems like Opus One Napa Valley 1999, Bodegas Vega Sicilia Unico Reserva Especial Ribera del Duero NV, Château Margaux 1986 and many more, or sample something new from the 26 international wines available by the glass.
