Piedmont Vintner Giovanni Conterno Dies

His family winery is known as a standard bearer for Barolo.
Feb 20, 2004

One of Italy's most esteemed winemakers, Giovanni Conterno, died on Feb. 18, after a long illness. He was 75.

Conterno was the owner of Piedmont estate Giacomo Conterno, which is near the town of Monforte d'Alba in the Barolo production area. The winery is best known for its Barolo Monfortino Riserva, which is made only in the best vintages. The wine has been a standard bearer for the Barolo region since the 1950s.

Giovanni and his brother, Aldo, ran the winery founded by their father, Giacomo, until 1969, when the two brothers went their separate ways. Giovanni continued to run the family estate while Aldo founded the Poderi Aldo Conterno estate, centered on the Bussia vineyards nearby.

Giovanni Conterno is survived by his wife, Ivonne; three daughters, Marcella, Ivana and Maurizia; and two sons, Roberto and Giacomo. Roberto will continue to run the estate. —Jo Cooke
