Wine Spectator's Mitch Frank reports that Bordeaux has long operated behind closed doors. That has changed as château owners have realized that they need to compete with marketing-savvy competitors all over the world. But even today, most châteaus require appointments and offer limited tours, and many are closed on weekends. Despite that, this is a fantastic region to visit, and wine lovers will be rewarded for doing what it takes to scale the walls.
