Monterey County is proof that every wine region deserves a second chance. Back in the 1960s, big wine producers like Paul Masson, Wente and Mirassou began planting grapes on a large scale here, convinced they had discovered a cooler version of the San Joaquin Valley in the sandy soils of Monterey's Salinas Valley floor.
