José Andrés, Activist

From the Jun 30, 2011, issue

Wine Spectator's Harvey Steiman reports that in 2004 star chef José Andrés created a fundraising event for D.C. Kitchen called Capital Food Fight, which has raised more than $3.5 million in seven years. D.C. Kitchen inspired Andrés to start, in the wake of the devastating earthquake in Haiti, World Central Kitchen, which aims to use the same model to feed and empower vulnerable people in humanitarian crises around the world. He is also working with a Spanish company to develop a solar cooker that he hopes will revolutionize poor nations' abilities to feed themselves without depleting their natural resources.
