Italy's Folonari Family Buys Brunello Estate

Former partners in Ruffino have added a new Montalcino property, La Fuga, to their new company.
Nov 13, 2001

Well-known Italian vintner Ambrogio Folonari and his son Giovanni Folonari -- former owners of the Ruffino wine company -- have agreed to buy the Brunello di Montalcino estate of La Fuga for an estimated $7 million. La Fuga's holdings include about 16.7 acres in the Brunello appellation and another 6.4 acres in Sant'Antimo.

"We wanted to add a Montalcino estate to our existing properties," said Giovanni Folonari. "A good wine such as Brunello always has a select market. La Fuga is a high-quality estate, and its vineyard has a very good exposure to the sun."

La Fuga, situated southeast of the town Montalcino, borders Frescobaldi's Castelgiocondo estate and Castello di Camigliano.

Ambrogio and Giovanni Folonari left the large Chianti house of Ruffino last year, when the two branches of the family split their wine holdings following disputes over the management of the company.

In addition to the new Montalcino acquisition, the Folonaris' company, Tenute di Ambrogio e Giovanni Folonari, owns a number of estates in Tuscany: Cabreo in the Chianti region; Nozzole in Chianti Classico; Conti Spalletti in Chianti Rufina; Fattoria di Gracciano in Montepulciano; Vigne a Porrona in Montecucco; Campo al Mare in Bolgheri; and Tenuta di Novacuzzo in Colli Orientali del Friuli.
