Inside Oregon Pinot Noir: Q&A With Josh Bergström

With a degree in business and French, Josh Bergström went into the wine business in 1999 with his physician father, John Bergström. They planted a vineyard in what became Oregon's Dundee Hills AVA. Josh made his first Pinot Noirs with purchased grapes, but now focuses on the family's 15-acre Dundee vineyard and a 5-acre vineyard located next to the winery, in Chehalem Mountains, as well as the 16-acre de Lancellotti Vineyard, owned by his sister and brother-in-law. Bergström also makes an entry-level Willamette Valley blend called Cumberland Reserve.

Bergström rapidly rose to the top tier of the state's producers with wines that show pure, ripe flavors, remarkable intensity and elegant frames. In the winery's first decade, 19 of its wines scored 92 to 95 points on the Wine Spectator 100-point scale. Few Oregon wineries can match that record. Bergström spoke recently with Wine Spectator.
