Q: How much fat is in wine? —Pat, Skokie, Ill.
A: None! The USDA's National Nutrient Database confirms that wine contains no fat. But that doesn't necessarily mean wine is going to help you lose weight. Wine is made from the juice of grapes, which is loaded with sugar (close to 5 grams of sugar per ounce). Most of that sugar is converted into alcohol during fermentation, but some of it remains. And alcohol contains plenty of calories as well—7 calories per gram, in fact, which adds up to about 120 to 130 calories per standard 5-ounce glass of wine. So while wine is fat-free, it still packs a caloric punch. But that doesn't mean it can't be part of a healthy diet for those watching their weight.
