The Iron Throne is back, and this time there be dragons aplenty—and plenty more wine! HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, premiered last night, starring the ancestors of all of our favorite and least favorite Targaryens, generally participating in all the same violence and scandal that we’ve come to expect from the series inspired by author George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire and Fire & Blood novels (as with GoT, Martin also serves as executive producer for House of the Dragon). The new show takes place about 200 years before the original series, so if you were serving Vintage Wine Estates’ GoT wines at your Night’s Watch party, sadly, you were behind the times. Or ahead of them? It’s not the easiest series to follow.
To truly complement these new episodes about old heroes, villains and dragons, you’ll want to cross the narrow sea for some dragon wine, obviously, specifically Vintage Wine Estates’ new House of the Dragon wine collection, vinted and bottled by Seven Kingdom Cellars. The 2019 California Cabernet Sauvignon, 2020 California red blend and 2021 Oregon Pinot Noir are each priced at $20 per bottle, and the labels are emblazoned with the Targaryen sigil of a fierce three-headed dragon.
Without spoiling the Dragon premiere for those who haven’t yet seen it—but really, what else could you have been doing last night?—we can confirm that wine appears to be as popular as ever in King’s Landing, and that winter seems not so much to be coming in this earlier tale, so Finland’s Game of Thrones–themed igloo hotel may need to be repurposed as a cooling center for those seeking sanctuary from those hot-headed Targaryens and their flame-breathing dragons (or from, you know, Europe’s real-life summer heat crisis).
