Higher Prices Realized in U.S. Auctions

Third-quarter sales spike as collectors splurge for blue-chip Bordeaux, but volume is down

Prices in the wine auction market gained traction in the third quarter of 2010, fueled by strong demand from buyers in Asia and South America. Domestic wine sales tracked by the Wine Spectator Auction Database rose 9 percent in value from the second quarter of 2010 to the third quarter of 2010, after falling 3 percent in the second quarter. Wine Spectator auction correspondent Peter D. Meltzer explains.
