The 1997 harvest in Italy opened a new chapter in that country's long wine history. It marked a transition for both producers and consumers and gave Italian wines new prominence on the world stage. The hot growing season changed the way vintners thought about grapegrowing, emphasizing lower yields and riper tannins.
