Elegant is a word that gets thrown around a lot in the world of wine. We use it to describe the character of a wine itself, a winemaker or winery’s style, even groups or categories of wine as a whole.

But what does it really mean when we talk about a wine’s elegance? Senior editor Alison Napjus started thinking about the significance of elegance in wine when a recent Q&A session featuring a panel of Italian winemakers had virtual audience members posing two queries: Is the term “elegant” overused in wine? And, do the “elegant” wines of the world have the capacity to age?
