Dear Dr. Vinny,

How do you order Sauvignon Blanc in a restaurant? Is it OK to just ask for "White Sav?"

—Erin, Coon Rapids, Minn.

Dear Erin,

While some wines are often referred to using shorthand, like “Cabs” for Cabernet Sauvignons or “Zins” for Zinfandels, I've never heard of Sauvignon Blanc referred to as "White Sav." I have heard Australians refer to Sauvignon Blanc as “Savvies,” or abbreviated as "SB" by industry folks, but those are pretty obscure references and you’d probably just end up confusing a restaurant server if you asked for any of those nicknames. (Check out our Know Your Grapes section for more on Sauvignon Blanc.)

There’s no need to complicate things when ordering a glass of wine. You can simply say "I'm in the mood for a Sauvignon Blanc," or "I like Sauvignon Blancs. What do you recommend?" and your server should point you in the right direction. Remember that Sauvignon Blancs from Europe won't necessarily have "Sauvignon Blanc" printed on the label; instead they'll identify which region the wine is from, like Bordeaux or Sancerre.
