San Francisco has an outsize reputation for fine chocolate. Scharffen Berger, the Bay Area company that really started the artisanal chocolate movement in this country, was founded here in the late 1990s, but the city’s chocolate history goes back much further, to the Gold Rush and beyond. This millennium has brought ever more producers to the Bay Area, a number of them lapsed tech people.
