Eight years ago, Pierre-Yves Colin made a fateful decision. He was working as winemaker for his family's company, following in the footsteps of his father, Marc. Their St.-Aubin winery, Domaine Marc Colin, had a reputation for lovely wines, thanks to a life of toil by Marc and recent innovations by young Pierre-Yves, the eldest son. But Pierre-Yves had started a small négoce operation in 2001 down the hill, in Chassagne-Montrachet, with his wife, Caroline Morey. And in 2006, he decided that was where his future lay. So he went to his father and told him he was leaving. What's more, he asked for his inheritance in advance—his share of the domaine's vineyards. Wine Spectator's Mitch Frank explains.
