In this issue, Wine Spectator salutes seven legends of California Chardonnay who contributed to the rise of America’s favorite white wine. Some of their names will be familiar from their wine labels—Aubert, Hobbs, Kistler, Kongsgaard and Ramey. Helen Turley, the recipient of Wine Spectator’s Distinguished Service Award in 2010, is behind the famed Marcassin Chardonnays, while Richard Graff revived a bankrupt Chalone Vineyard and put its Chardonnay on the map. Each of these visionaries brought their own approach and philosophy to Chardonnay, but they all shared a belief in its potential for greatness in California.
