Barbera Easter Sunday

Returned from a walk in the countryside with my two dogs and my 11-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter. My childern are visiting from England. We had a simple lunch for Easter Sunday–fettuccine all’Alfredo (cream, butter and parmesan sauce) and tomato salad. I had a glass of 2003 Elio Grasso Barbera d’Alba Vigna Martina – 87 points while tasting it in my kitchen.

My son Jack said it smelled like strawberries and raspberries. He was right! It tasted the same. I am a big fan of good Barbera, and 2003 is a ripe and juicy vintage. The wine is versatile due to its rich fruit, bright acidity and light tannins. It goes with all meats, pasta as well as grilled fish. Elio makes a good Barbera. (In fact, most of his wines are very good to excellent quality and reasonably priced.) I also like Barberas from Vietti, Roberto Voerzio, Luigi Einaudi, Bruno Rocca, Giacomo Bologna, Pira (Chiara Boschis) and Cascina Ballarin. They are usually between $30 and $50 a bottle. Elio’s Barbera is more like $20.

Barbera is also not too bad with chocolate. My kids have already eaten tons of chocolate eggs today….
