Dear Dr. Vinny,

Which varietal has the fewest calories? My girlfriends think that red wine is more fattening than white wine. Is that true?

—Heather S., New York

Dear Heather,

All wines have about 100 calories per glass, more or less—sweeter and fortified wines have more calories than dry wines.

There's a nuance that might support the theory that red wine is more fattening: the higher the alcohol, the more a wine will slow down your metabolism. Since reds tend to be higher in alcohol than whites, even though the calories in each glass might be about the same, the higher alcohol might make them a bit more "fattening."
