In San Francisco, wine country is always within striking distance. And while there's something to be said for a visit to Cabernet country in the northern end of Napa Valley, it can be just as rewarding to step a bit off the beaten path.
Below are itineraries for exploring three wine regions -- Napa Carneros, southern Sonoma and Santa Cruz -- that deliver winning combinations of beautiful scenery, excellent dining and, of course, quality wine. They're also close to town -- so long as you avoid rush hour, you'll never be much more than 90 minutes from San Francisco.
Although each of these trips is intended to be spaced over a leisurely day, we've also included inn recommendations for those who want to extend their stay. The Sonoma trip offers the greatest variety of producers, with five estates profiled, but four will fill the day. Our Napa Carneros itinerary takes you to chic Domaine Carneros, among other stops. Or head for the Santa Cruz Mountains -- rugged mountain territory with breathtaking views and heartstopping hairpin turns.
If a car isn't part of your San Francisco plans, the ferry trip across the bay from the Embarcadero to Alameda ($10 round trip) stops about 100 yards from Rosenblum Cellars, a leading Zinfandel specialist. They make more than 30 wines in a characterful old warehouse. If you arrange in advance, you can also taste the small-production, high quality wines of JC Cellars, made by Rosenblum winemaker Jeffrey Cohn. Wherever you go, always call ahead to confirm schedules. Many of the producers listed here receive visitors only by appointment. And those who are open to the general public might spice up a visit if you have any special requests.
