VILLAGIO INN & SPA
Location, they say, is everything, and Villagio Inn & Spa in Yountville -- near the center of Napa Valley -- couldn't have a better one. Smack dab on Route 29 (Napa's main thoroughfare), Villagio is an ideal pied-à-terre for anyone intent on exploring the glories of America's preeminent wine region.
Yountville is the southern gateway to the finest vineyards of Napa, with more than three dozen major producers within a 15-minute drive. The inn sits across the road from the vines of Domaine Chandon, and the town of St. Helena is just seven miles up the road.
Wine lovers will find Villagio's concierge very helpful with arranging visits to producers. The inn offers its own limousine at $50 per hour with a four-hour minimum. Other local limousine services, comparably priced, are also available. Refer to the concierge for information about wine-related exhibitions and events in the area. Several producers offer tasting classes, and the Napa Valley Museum, in Yountville, features an interactive presentation about the wine production process.
Despite the proximity of so many wineries, don't be surprised if you're not in a hurry to hit the road. Each of Villagio's rooms is spacious and comfortable, equipped with a wood-burning fireplace and a patio or balcony. The 112 accommodations contain oversized baths; 26 suites also feature tubs with Jacuzzi-style whirlpools.
Many treatments are performed with local ingredients, such as Napa grapeseed oil and crushed grapeseeds used for exfoliation.
Spa packages include a massage, facial and/or body treatment, and are ideal for an afternoon of intense relaxation. I wouldn't recommend scheduling a package for the morning because treatments should not be followed by anything more strenuous than dinner.
