Toasting the New Year

If ever there were a season to get in the swings of things, to usher out the old year and ring in the new, this is it. In fact, if ever there were a New Year's Eve (or New Year's Day, or New Year's Afternoon, and Day After New Year's Day) that called for all the stops to be pulled out, this one is it.

Therefore: Champagne. Why? Because Champagne and New Year's are, quite simply, made for each other. The bubbles and dropping ball in Times Square. Glasses raised. Toasts to the future. Toasts in honor of the tragic past.

And they're not all wallet-busters, either. Sure, there's king Krug, from 1998, at $220 (and 93 points), but there's also Pannier Brut 1996 at $33 (and 91 points). You'll find a little rosé Champagne as well, if you feel like thinking pink in 2002.

One thing to bear in mind: these bubblies are best served in crystal flutes, not plastic cups. Unless, of course, you happen to find yourself in a place where fancy stemware is not in the picture. Then lift whatever glass you can find. Or cup or canteen. Of plastic or tin or clay. Here's to 2002. To a bright and better year.
