Prosecco, the sparkling wine of Italy's Veneto region, offers very good alternatives to Champagne

Prosecco, the staple sparkler of the Veneto region of Italy, offers a viable alternative to its counterparts from France's Champagne region, but you have to be careful with your choices. In fact, many of the over 80 Proseccos I recently tasted blind, at Wine Spectator 's European bureau in Tuscany, were little more than simple, appley whites with a burst of froth.
