
The 2001 vintage is turning out to be a milestone for the red wines of Rioja, Spain's most prestigious wine region. The growing season was close to ideal, producing rich, ripe, structured wines. In addition, it helped mark the transition from the traditional-style wines that dominated the 1970s and '80s (silky reds with delicate flavors of cherry, tea and spices) to the new-style Riojas, which have the concentration, structure and ripe fruit to match their international competition.
