Tasting Highlights: Madiran

These big, tannic, limited-production reds from southwest France offer excellent value

Located in the southwest corner of France, Madiran is a small appellation, only 3,200 acres of vineyards in total, but it makes big red wines. The wines are based on the relatively unheralded Tannat grape, though grapes such as Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon can be included in the blend.
