The 2002 vintage in Bordeaux was a tricky one. It was a year with a relatively poor summer and a rainy August. If not for the good weather in September, it would have been a disaster. Top estates with large percentages of early-ripening Merlot had a slight advantage in 2002, making less austere wines.
