Tasting Highlights: 2003 Barolo

A vintage questionable at first proves far better than vintners had hoped

The 2003 vintage for Barolo turned out better than anyone could have imagined, even the wine producers themselves. Just a few months after the harvest, I remember a number of top vintners saying that they wouldn't be bottling their 2003s because the wines lacked definition and style, that they were too rich and fat while some even lacked color.
