Outstanding wines with friendlier price tags

Piedmont's string of excellent vintages, from 1996 through 2001, produced some of the best reds ever made in the region, particularly in the case of Piedmont's top Nebbiolo-based red, Barolo. This has been good news for collectors of Barolo, but the sting in the tail has been the consistent rise in prices over the same period.
