New Schramsberg Brut Rose Raises Money for Napa Preserve

Next month, California's Schramsberg Vineyards is releasing a new Brut Rose cuvee, called Querencia, to show its support for the Napa Valley Agricultural Preserve. The Napa Valley sparkling wine producer will donate all proceeds to the Jack L. Davies Agricultural Preserve Fund, created when the cofounder of Schramsberg died last year.

Querencia, a blend of Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier from the 1995 vintage, will be available exclusively through the winery in Calistoga and at Wine Spectator Greystone Restaurant at the Culinary Institute of America and the CIA's campus store in St. Helena. The wine will retail for $27 and sell for $40 at the restaurant.

The Agricultural Preserve was established in 1968 to conserve agricultural land in Napa Valley and to protect the region from encroaching urban sprawl. Jack Davies and his wife, Jamie -- who came to Napa in the 1960s to make the area's first sparkling wines modeled after French Champagne -- were instrumental in encouraging the community to support the preserve.

The name Querencia was chosen through a competition held late last year. James Hickey, the Napa County planning director at the time the preserve was created, submitted the winning entry. He defines the Spanish word as the "deep and abiding affection each person has for the place he calls home."
