La Bastide de Capelongue

While the Northern Rhône Valley has only a few resort hotels, the Southern Rhône is blessed with an abundance. There are old mills in medieval villages and impressive stone farmhouses in the verdant countryside, all transformed into luxury lodgings. Amid this appealing variety, one family of hoteliers stands out-the Loubets.

Son Edouard runs the Moulin de Lourmarin, a two-star Michelin gastronomic mecca in the village of Lourmarin. Mother Claude owns the more spectacular Relais & Châteaux Bastide de Capelongue, perched above the fortified hillside village of Bonnieux. It enjoys a romantic setting, looking down onto Bonnieux's picturesque 16th and 17th century stone houses and churches. Visitors can reach the village's numerous art galleries on foot, or go mountain climbing or bird watching in the nearby 247,000-acre regional park.

Le Mas des Herbes Blanches

This handsome inn is set on the slopes of a hill near Gordes, and overlooks a valley full of sunflowers, lavender and thyme. Modeled after traditional bories (low-level stone dwellings), the hotel looks a little primitive from the outside. Inside, however, warmth and simple elegance prevail. Eric Sapet, one of the top cooks in the region, is at the helm in the kitchen.

L'Oustaù de Baumanière

This oasis lies in an arid plain of olive groves, at the foot of a craggy limestone mountain. Look up from the lovely pool and you'll see Les Baux, a celebrated medieval ruin, perched above. Outdoor dining is under enormous old shade trees behind a 16th century farmhouse that has been a luxury hotel for five decades. Chef Jean-André Charial's classical cooking well deserves its two Michelin stars.
