The 240-acre property in McLaren Vale will support the California company's new Yangarra Park brand from Australia.

Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates has purchased its first vineyard in Australia, paying about US$6 million for a 240-acre property in the McLaren Vale region. The deal comes on the heels of the release of the company's first Australian wine brand, Yangarra Park, in September.

The property, which was known as Eringa Park and was once the flagship vineyard of producer Normans Wines, is planted largely with red varieties, including a Grenache vineyard that dates to 1923. The purchase includes another 185 acres, only a small portion of which is suitable for grapevines, according to Kendall-Jackson spokesman Jim Caudill.

The vineyard will be renamed Yangarra Park and could one day be the site for a new winery if the brand, which now has a total annual production of 75,000 cases, continues to grow. "Right now there isn't a need," Caudill said, "but it's a possibility."
