Wine and music are a natural marriage. Now, extending that marriage in a philanthropic direction, several individuals in the fields of wine and music have launched a gift set with the aim of helping inner-city kids fulfill their musical aspirations.
Reichsrat von Buhl winery, from Germanys Pfalz region, and its U.S. importer, Cellars International, have teamed up with Grammy-nominated jazz composer Maria Schneider and her record label Enja. The group has put together a gift package that includes a CD called Days of Wine and Roses -- a collection of jazz standards that Schneider recorded live in New York for this project -- and two bottles of Reichsrat von Buhl Riesling. The boxed set sells for $60.
The first 2,000 gift boxes will be sold exclusively through Wine.com and will include two bottles of Reichsrat von Buhl Riesling Spdtlese Trocken 1999 (which scored 85 points, "very good," on Wine Spectator's 100-point scale), an elegant, dry, apple- and spice-flavored white. An additional 2,000 gift sets containing Reichsrat von Buhl Riesling QbA Halbtrocken Pfalz 1999 (88 points), a vibrant white showing citrus and mineral character, will be available through retail outlets across the country. German artist Dieter Portugal designed both the wine labels and the packaging.
All four parties are funding the project equally, and the proceeds (100 percent, after all expenses are paid) will go to a foundation to sponsor a mentorship program in music in North America and Europe. "Students will study with and work for their mentors," explained Maria Schneider, whose CD Allegresse has earned a Grammy nomination this year for Best Large Jazz Ensemble. "I was fortunate enough to work with composer Gil Evans, and when you are around somebody like that and you see their world, you begin to see the possibilities for your own world."
Schneider has worked with von Buhl's winery before; starting with the 1997 vintage, she has collaborated on special selections of Rieslings that bear her name and a musical theme on the label.
