Q: Is an unopened box of wine that is two years old safe to drink? -Liz, Anglesey, Wales
A: Safe? Absolutely. But at its prime? Maybe not. Boxed wines age faster than bottled wines-the bags inside the box are semi-permeable, meaning they allow very small amounts of oxygen inside. Most producers recommend boxed wines be sold and consumed within a year or so after packaging. That means that the wine inside might not taste so fresh, perhaps taking on nutty, oxidized notes.
If you haven't tried a boxed wine lately, you might want to take another look. It's one of the largest growing categories of wine, with plenty of value, eco-friendly packaging and easy-drinking, quality wines inside.
