Q: All the talk about red wine being heart healthy--does that mean Merlot or just plain red table wine? When I go into a store to buy red wine I am overwhelmed. Which type of red wine is supposedly the best for your health?
A: Most studies we have covered regarding the heart-health benefits of red wine make no distinction between the different types of red wine, but instead, focus on the amount of wine one consumes. To that extent, it appears that drinking any type of wine in light to moderate amounts (one half to two glasses a day) can improve your heart health. Studies have shown that moderate drinking can decrease the risk of having a heart attack for men, as well as reduce the risk of heart disease. Pick a wine that interests you because of how it tastes--you'll be much more likely to enjoy it!
