Health Q&A: Nutrition Fact Labels on Wine Bottles

Posted: June 26, 2008

Q: Will nutrition facts ever appear on wine bottles? — Frank Price, Rockland, Md.

A: Currently, legislation on requiring wineries to put nutritional information on bottles has been proposed by the federal government, but it has not yet been ratified. A major concern is that the costs of testing wines for nutritional value and of printing the required labels would burden small wineries. In the meantime, a good place to look for nutritional information about different types of wine is the USDA nutritional database, available through nutrition.gov. In addition, some producers, including Yellow Tail and Sutter Home, voluntarily post selected nutritional information, such as caloric content and fat grams, on their Web sites.
