Q: I have a friend who has an aggressive type of thyroid cancer and he is scheduled to begin the usual treatments soon. In your opinion would a small glass of red wine each day or night do him any good?--Edgar Tallent

A: Studies on the effects of wine usually eliminate cancer sufferers from the process, choosing instead to focus more on the aspects of prevention by examining healthy participants. As such, there are vast amounts of studies that show that responsible wine consumption contributes to a healthy lifestyle, but few on whether or not this behavior could benefit a person living with cancer. Your friend should definitely check with his doctor about whether or not wine could interfere with his medication.
