Health Q&A: Alcohol and Sleep

Q: My husband has a hard time sleeping after drinking wine, especially red wine. What would cause that?--Jeane

A: Although one study has actually found that red winegrapes contain melatonin, a sleep aid, the National, Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute has this to say in "Your Guide to Healthy Sleep" (available online):

"Avoid alcoholic drinks before bed. You may think having an alcoholic 'nightcap' will help you sleep, but alcohol robs you of deep sleep and REM sleep, keeping you in the lighter stages of sleep. You also tend to wake up in the middle of the night when the effects of the alcohol have worn off."
