Harlan Estate, which produces one of Napa Valley's most expensive and hardest-to-get Cabernets, will be expanding its production with the creation of six new wines.
All of the new bottlings will be Cabernet Sauvignon—based blends and will have their own proprietary names, which have not yet been revealed.
Unlike the Harlan wines, which come only from the estate's vineyards in Oakville, the new wines will be made from purchased grapes. Harlan owner Bill Harlan and winemaker Bob Levy are sourcing fruit from hillside vineyards throughout Napa Valley.
Levy will be making the new wines, which will have their own separate winery facility and barrel-aging cellar. Planned production of the six bottlings will total about 6,000 cases annually -- 1,000 cases of each wine -- a significant boost for a winery that currently makes only about 1,500 cases a year.
The first two wines will be released this winter, with the remainder added in successive vintages. Prices have not yet been determined.
As with Harlan, the majority of the wines will be released to restaurants and retailers, giving consumers a chance to track down the wines. Harlan director Don Weaver commented, "Bill has never liked the 'cult' label we've been given. Obviously, we could easily move all the wine through our mailing list, but we pride ourselves on putting 60 percent of our production directly into the marketplace. We're planning to do the same with these new wines."
