Gallo Veteran Charles Crawford Dies at 81

Charles M. Crawford, vice president of E. & J. Gallo Winery and the first winemaker hired by the company, died Dec. 11 in Modesto, Calif. He was 81.

Crawford spent his entire career at Gallo, starting in 1942 as a winemaker. He held a variety of responsibilities over the years -- including chemical engineering, production management, quality assurance and scientific research management -- before becoming vice president.

He was a charter member of the Wine Institute's Technical Committee and a charter member and past president of the American Society of Enologists. He is profiled in "California Wine Pioneers," a booklet compiled by The Bancroft Library at the University of California at Berkeley and sponsored by the Wine Spectator Scholarship Foundation.

Memorial services will be held Dec. 16 at 10 a.m. at Lakewood Memorial Park, 900 Santa Fe. Ave, Hughson, Calif. Gifts in Crawford's memory may be sent to Faith Home Teen Ranch, P.O.
