Following a serious car accident involving California wine expert Ronn Wiegand and his wife, Brenda Bobblitt, Wine Spectator is underwriting a fund-raising dinner and auction to help cover the family's medical and living expenses.
Wiegand and Boblitt have published the industry newletter "Restaurant Wine" for the past 10 years. As a result of the November accident, Boblitt, who is still in intensive care, faces a number of major operations. Wiegand underwent hip reconstruction surgery and needs a lengthy rehabilitation period before he can return to work. The couple's 15-year-old twin sons -- Ehren, who broke a hip, and Hubert, who separated his shoulder -- are back in school.
The Ronn Wiegand Family Dinner and Wine Auction will be held on Feb. 4 in St. Helena at the Culinary Institute of America's Greystone Barrel Room. Tickets to the event are $250 per person, and all proceeds will go to the Wiegand family. The tickets can be purchased from Balzac Communications at 1200 Jefferson Street, Napa, Calif., 94559, or by calling (800) 709-7667.
Wine Spectator is seeking donors to contribute significant lots of wine for the auction. The goal is to obtain 25 major lots -- such as those that would allow bidders to join winery principals for dinner at a top restaurant or bring together many wines and vintners from a single appellation -- by Jan. 4.
Financial contributions can also be made directly to the Wiegand Family Fund, c/o Bank of the West, 3300 Jefferson St., Napa, Calif. 94558. The account number is 094268174.
